Behind the Image: Science Centre

Did you know that on a typical shoot day with Hero we can shoot up to 100GB worth of memory cards?  That’s roughly 3000 images. Per camera! In all of these gigabites there is usually one image that stands out for us. It could be because it was a tough shot to capture, or maybe it nailed how all the pre-planned elements can come together. Or it was an unexpected shot that worked thanks to being prepared. Either way there is always a story behind the image. Drew Myers is sharing his story behind this one!

Hero: Tell me about this shoot:

Drew: Well to begin with, this was a location we’d been trying to get into for quite a while. I mean the science center? Pretty cool. They finally opened the doors to us so we planned this shoot around families and kids getting into science – really engaging with it - inspiring the next generation of astronauts, physicists, and engineers.

H: What were the specific challenges with this shoot?

D: After getting into the location we still had a lot of logistics to overcome. First of all the space was huge. We had to be organized so we could make quick changes and cover as much ground as possible with our models and scenes, thus maximizing the number of shots we could get. It all took a lot of strict scheduling and coordination.

For this particular scene, the trick was shooting in such low light with such young, rambunctious models.

Luckily, the planetarium techs were able to manipulate the light for us to work with.

Also, we only had 7 models left at this time in the day, so we had to shoot in such a way that you couldn’t tell the auditorium was almost empty.

H: How does this image represent what Hero does?

D: I think it’s aspirational, authentic, and perfectly imperfect. The staggering is nice to let the background fall off feeling like there could be more people in the background while still having one person as the central subject. I feel like it tells a story that makes you believe it’s really happening – like you could totally imagine coming into this theatre and seeing exactly this scene. That’s something that I feel Hero really does well.  This scene was in our heads all day as something we wanted to try, but to actually be able to get some cool shots like this was a big success for the day - one that we all had really aimed for.
