Behind the image: Pets and their owners

After each shoot, the Hero team sits down to go through all 3000+ images captured that day. Although that number may seem overwhelming, there is usually one image that stands out from the rest. Maybe it was a particularly challenging shot to get right, or it could have been a serendipitous moment where all the preplanning came together with a natural expression and the right light. No matter what the reason, there's always a story behind the image. Rebecca Frick is going to share hers about this image from Pets and their Owners.

Hero: Tell me a little about this shoot.

Rebecca: This shoot had been a dream of art director, Devra Brick, for 100 years. No one ever wanted to do it because we knew it would be so difficult. First we’d have to find the right models who owned well-behaved animals as well as a photogenic house (so that the animal would be at ease). Working with animals also meant that we’d have to break a normal shoot day into several parts/locations. But the dream wouldn’t die, so the hunt began for talented pet owners.

Now, I should probably add that I really don’t do dogs. They make me a little nervous. My personal challenge was to play along at each house, despite my instincts!

H: So what about this particular image, were you expecting to get something like this?

R: I had no expectations for this shoot in general. This day we were shooting a 12 year old with an oversized new-to-the-family puppy. All I could think was “good luck!”. We started the shoot in the girl's bedroom, which had great natural light and real life "messiness". We threw in some homework props and the four of us crowded in with hopes of capturing everyday authentic moments. Surprisingly, she had more control over Leo (the pup) than I anticipated and we were able to get several shots without too much ruckus – including this moment!

H: How does this image represent Hero images and what do you like about it?

R: We really try to make our images authentic yet crafted and I think this shot shows how we embrace elements as they are – keeping the scene as natural as possible while also trying to have our models interact in a way to show their real relationship. The dog worked in this shot because he wasn’t paying attention to the camera. It looks like he is involved with what she was doing. He is with her in her most mundane moment. Yeah sure, maybe we were bribing him with treats, but you do what you have to do!

After this shoot wrapped, I can honestly say my heart warmed to the little furry creatures. If my husband could, he’d come home with a dog tomorrow and after working with these animals it's possible I wouldn’t turn him away at the door ... but don’t tell him that.
