Tech Talk: What's in Our Kit?

Who doesn’t love a case full of photography gear? Padded compartments full of beautifully crafted glass, metal, and electronics – what a thing of beauty to open and gaze upon. Photographers and enthusiasts alike often cast admiring glances at our cameras and we know what they’re thinking… “Oooh, that’s a nice camera” So, let us share the love, and show you what’s in our kit…

Starting from the outside, I have tried just about every camera bag out there and have found none superior to those made by Think Tank. They are meticulously thought out and durably made, comfortable to carry and well padded for our gear. We use the Think Tank Airport Essentials. It is small enough to carry on an airplane, big enough for everything we need to cram into it.

Next, we load it up with a couple of Canon 5D mk III bodies. Always take a spare if the shoot matters. Our shoots always matter. We typically have two spares on set at any given time.

We carry enough camera batteries and CF cards to last three times longer than we’ll be shooting. I’m not exaggerating – like I said, the shoots matter. We don’t typically have battery chargers in the bag as they’ll inevitably get left behind, abandoned in a wall socket. Having extra batteries means we never need to have chargers anyway.

Our wireless transmitter and a paired 15” MacBook Pro laptop are always in the pack – and don’t forget the laptop power cord!

Then there are the lenses: every bag has an EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II lens as well as an EF 16-35mm f2.8 L II. Neither of these guys see much work, but they’re the right tool for the job when they’re needed. Then, there are the workhorses – the EF 24-70mm f2.8 L IIs. Throw in the Sigma 24mm f1.4 and 35mm f1.4 primes that I mentioned in an earlier blog post and some fast 50mm f1.2L Canon glass and you’ve got yourself our kit!

All told, each bag weighs about 30lbs (13.5kgs). It’s a lot of money to be carrying around in a backpack too, but it’s what it takes to get the job done!
